Adsense and Insufficient content

One of many reasons behind the decision to build this website was to make a quick buck through Google Ads. It takes time to go through all the pictures, filter out those that aren't suitable, edit those that are semi suitable and upload them to the site. However this article isn't about the pictures and the process behind them because the site needs everything else but pictures, it needs more text, at least from Googles point of view. This has been made pretty obvious after sending Google Adsense an application three times and always receiving the same response, "Insufficient content".

In the beginning I thought it would be a piece of cake to whip up a website, add Google Ads and start earning some money but that wasn't the case. I sent the first application just when I was about to start building the website, which didn't even have any content yet, and to nobody's surprise I received the "Insufficient content" answer. I could understand the reason at that time because the page didn't have any content. So I whipped up the website, added the majority of pictures I had already uploaded to Facebook and a contact page and sent another application to Google.

To some surprise I received the same answer and wasn't too happy about it because the website had the content I had planned on making profit from. So I set out to add more content by adding more pictures so that all primary pages had some content and finally a blog section, which only had one article, and with high hopes I sent an application. After receiving the same answer for the previous applications I didn't have much hope of getting an approval this time but I was hoping that the blog section would hopefully change the reviewers decision. That sure wasn't the case and I received the third rejection with the words, "Insufficient content".

After doing some research I found out that Google's Adsense reviewers are pretty strict on what needs to be present on the site to deserve the right to use these popular ads. I think that nobody knows this fact unless they are trying to implement these ads on their website. At least that was my case when I started this journey because I thought it would be a walk in the park and everyone around me told me that Google Ads was the best way to advertise. Let's take a look at the suggestions the reviewer sent with the rejection email.

  1. Make sure that your pages have sufficient text - websites that contain mostly images, videos or Flash animations will not be approved.
I know! This is exactly the description of my website but my stubbornness is unstoppable and I wanted to get approved so this was ignored for the first two applications.
  2. Your content should contain complete sentences and paragraphs, not only headlines.
Again, this description fits my website somewhat.
  3. Ensure that your website is fully built and launched before you apply for AdSense - do not apply while your site's still in a beta or "under construction" phase or only consists of a website template.
This fits the websites description the first time a sent an application.
  4. Provide a clear navigation system for your visitors so that they can easily find all of the sections and pages of your website.
My navigation couldn't be clearer. However I only have a top-level navigation and breadcrumbs.

The first two points are the ones I need to address and that is my goal for now. I haven't gone into extensive research about these topics but I have learned the following.

  1. It doesn't matter how many pages you have, it's all about the amount of text that is presented on your website. You can have thousands of pages with 100-200 words but that isn't enough. The word on the street is that you need to have minimum 400 words for single page content.
  2. The content must be unique. If your content is unique it's more valuable and more likely to get audience. You can check for duplicate content by going to Copyscape and search for copies of your page on the web.
  3. Your site must have a good value of unique visitors, at least 100-200.
  4. You must have Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools linked to your website to feed Google information about your site.
  5. The website must be well search engine optimized (SEO) where keywords and descriptions describe the content perfectly.

While writing this article I found another article, 13 things to follow before applying for Google Adsense program, which explains the requirements very clearly and after reading it I felt like someone hit me in the face with a brick because according to the list I'm far away from fulfilling the requirements.

I'm stubborn so I'm going to stay on course and try to fulfill every requirement. Therefore I'm going to list up all the requirements below and strike out each one when they get fulfilled.

  1. Top Level Domain
    That's an easy one. www.geiri.net
  2. Domain Age - Don't accept any sites of age below 6 months
It's 5 days old during the writing of this article.
  3. Age Limit / Age Verification - I must be 18+
    Way ahead of being 18.
  4. About page
    On it!
  5. Contact Us Page
There is a "Contact us" page but it probably might be a little bit more juicy.
  6. Name & Email Verification
    Comes with the "About" page.
  7. Minimum number of posts - 60+ posts and length 500+ words.
    Current status: 1 post.
  8. Type of Content
    My content is family safe.
  9. Design
Maybe I need to do some research on this topic because I don't know what kind of design fits best for Adsense.
  10. Other Ad Network
I will probably try and get ads from other source while I'm working my way through this list. At the moment local advertisement is the safest bet.
  11. Privacy policy
I will add a privacy policy.
  12. Providing value - Don't complain about not making money
Maybe this article could come out as a complaint but I'm simply telling my story and hoping to resolve my websites issues.
  13. Paid Traffic
    That's a big no no.

Now it's time to stop writing and start implementing these requirements. Also this article has gone way to long and for those that have read the whole thing, give yourself a high five and have a nice day!
